Fluorecents Vs. HPS

I work with this old hippie that grew 8' weed with as little as 80 watts of cool white fluorecents. He kept the light strips on a chain about 6" from 4 plants evenly spaced under the lights, and raised the lights as they grew. Is this possible? Could I get away with using 1 100 watt HPS w/o an exhust? My proposed Closet Garden is 2' X 2' X 6'. The light would be hung on one of those farm grade hanging bowl reflectors. Would this dramatically heat up my closet even if I were to place an ocillating fan inside? Thanks for any info.
